Rain Barrel Class

Thursday, May 16, 2019

The classes, which carry a registration fee of $30, include a rain barrel which each participant is invited to take home and install. The selling price for a rain barrel is normally around $100, however funds collected by Haine Middle School students in Cranberry and Seven Fields are subsidizing their distribution to everyone enrolled in the class. Registration is limited to residents of those two communities and is capped at 25 participants per class session. The rain barrel class, which has been offered several times before, will be presented by fifth grade students from Haine Middle School’s gifted student enrichment program. Its curriculum, under the direction of teacher Allison Sebbins, is focused on the environment. Home Depot is a sponsor of this year’s program, together with the Township government.

To register for the class, call 724-776-4806 or visit the Cranberry Township Customer Service Desk during normal business hours.  Advance payment is by cash or check is due at the time of registration.

Rain barrels, which attach to a building’s downspouts, provide a straightforward way of capturing as much as 55 gallons of rainwater runoff for later use in lawn and garden irrigation.

Cranberry supplies fresh water and wastewater treatment to more than 90 percent of the Township’s population.  It also maintains a network of storm water catch basins and conduits throughout the community.  As a result, water conservation as well as storm water management are important Township responsibilities.  Rain barrels provide advantages to both areas.
