[ARCHIVED] A motorist’s refresher on school bus safety

School buses are high-priority vehicles. Motorists need to be extra cautious when approaching one or entering a school zone, where speeding penalties are enhanced. When yellow lights on a school bus are flashing, get ready to stop; that’s what the bus driver is signaling. When red lights are flashing and a folding stop sign or arm is deployed from the bus, you must come to a full stop at least 10 feet from the bus – no matter which direction it’s going. You need to wait until the lights stop and the arm is folded back up to resume driving. That’s the law, and local police enforce it. Violators can be fined $250 for each violation, given five points on their driving record, and have their drivers license suspended for 60 days.
